Choosing art for a living room

Start with the main wall. Most living rooms have one wall everyone faces: above the sofa, opposite it, or the long wall beside an open-plan kitchen. One painting sized to that wall does more than several small ones spread around the room.

Size it to the furniture. Above a sofa, aim for a work about two-thirds the sofa's width. For a standard three-seater that usually means a painting 120 to 180cm wide. On a bare feature wall, a work that fills 60 to 75 percent of the usable width reads as deliberate.

Hang it low enough. Leave 15 to 25cm between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame, so the painting and the furniture read as one. On an open wall, hang the centre of the work about 145 to 150cm from the floor.

Pick a mood, not a colour match. A quiet landscape or a soft abstract calms a busy family room; a bold colour field gives a neutral, minimal room a focal point. Take one colour from the room into the painting rather than matching everything.

What size painting goes above a sofa?

About two-thirds the width of the sofa. For a 2.2m sofa that's a painting around 140 to 150cm wide, or a pair of works with a small gap between them.

Should living room art be landscape or portrait?

Above a long sofa or sideboard, a landscape (horizontal) format usually suits best. Tall, narrow walls beside a window or in a double-height space suit portrait formats.
