Materials

Built for the work, not bought off a shelf.

Stone swatches and finish samples can be viewed at the gallery in Woollahra. Bring the dimensions of your piece and we will work from there.

Stone

Granite, marble, limestone and honed composite. Heavy, stable and well suited to outdoor and high traffic sites. A range of finishes from polished to flamed.

Steel & timber

Powder coated or raw steel for a contemporary line, and timber finished to match existing joinery. Both can be made hollow for cable runs or ballast.

Acrylic

Clear or frosted acrylic almost disappears, which suits small works where the base should not compete with the sculpture.

Getting the proportion right

Plinth height is set by how the work is meant to be read. A figurative bronze usually wants its focal point near eye level for a standing viewer. An abstract form often reads better lower, where the silhouette can be seen against the room. Footprint matters too: a base that is visually heavier than the work makes the sculpture look smaller than it is, and one that is too slight makes it look precarious even when it is perfectly stable.

Outdoor and garden plinths

Outdoor bases need drainage, a footing suited to the ground conditions, and a material that will not stain or spall through Sydney summers and coastal salt. We specify accordingly and can coordinate with landscapers and builders where a plinth is being integrated into paving, a garden bed or a pool surround.

Commercial and public sites

For commercial installations, plinths can be designed to meet OH&S and anti tamper requirements, with concealed fixings, weighted or bolted bases and edge treatments that suit a public thoroughfare. Can I see the stone and finish options?

Yes. Swatches and finish samples can be viewed at the gallery at 150 Edgecliff Road, Woollahra. Seeing stone in person matters, because colour and grain vary between batches.

How do you decide the height?

From the work and the room. We look at where the focal point of the sculpture sits, whether it will be viewed seated or standing, and what is behind it. For outdoor pieces we also consider the sightline from the house and from the street.

Do you make plinths for sculpture bought elsewhere?

Yes, and it is common. Send photographs, dimensions and the weight, and tell us where the piece is going.

Will an outdoor plinth stain or crack?

Not if the material and footing are specified correctly for the site. Coastal salt, drainage and ground movement all factor in, which is why we ask about the location before recommending a material.

Can a plinth be made anti tamper for a public site?

Yes. Concealed fixings, weighted or bolted bases and appropriate edge treatments are all available, and we can work to OH&S requirements with engineer certification where a site requires it.
