Choosing art for a dining room

Hang for seated eyes. In a dining room people look at the walls while sitting, so hang a little lower than usual: the centre of the work around 135 to 145cm from the floor, or 20 to 25cm above a sideboard.

Size it to the table or the sideboard. A painting about two-thirds the length of the sideboard below it, or roughly the width of the table on a facing wall, keeps the room in proportion. Long dining tables suit long horizontal works or a pair.

Be bolder here. Dining rooms are used in the evening and for company, so they can carry stronger colour and more energetic work than a bedroom. Still life, floral and figurative paintings are long-standing dining room choices; a large abstract works just as well in a contemporary space.

Mind the light and the food. Avoid hanging works on paper directly above a buffet or near a cooktop in open-plan spaces, where heat and steam can reach them. An adjustable picture light or LED track makes a painting part of the evening.

How high should art hang in a dining room?

Slightly lower than in a hallway, because people are seated: the centre about 135 to 145cm from the floor, or 20 to 25cm above a sideboard.

What size painting suits a dining room?

About two-thirds the length of the sideboard or console below it. For an open wall, a work 120 to 180cm wide usually suits a six- to eight-seat table.

Can I see a painting in my dining room before buying?

Yes. Send us a photo of the wall and we'll show you works to scale, and we offer in-home trials across greater Sydney.
