Choosing art for a bedroom

Above the bed. The wall behind the bedhead is the natural spot. A painting about two-thirds the width of the bed looks balanced: around 100 to 120cm wide for a queen, 120 to 150cm for a king. Leave 15 to 25cm between the bedhead and the bottom of the frame.

Opposite the bed. This is the wall you actually look at, from bed. It suits a work you want to live with closely: a calm landscape, a soft abstract or a favourite colour.

Choose a calmer palette. Most people sleep better with softer colours and gentler compositions in the bedroom: blues, greens, neutrals, florals and quiet abstracts. Save the boldest work for the living room.

Keep it safe. Above a bed, fix the work with two hooks or a French cleat so it can't swing or drop, and consider acrylic rather than glass for works on paper. Our hanging team can install it for you.

What size art goes above a queen bed?

Around 100 to 120cm wide, or a pair of smaller works with a gap of about 8 to 10cm between them.

What colours are best for bedroom art?

Softer, restful palettes suit most bedrooms: blues, greens, soft pinks and neutrals. Pick up one colour from the bedding or the walls rather than matching everything.

Can I see a painting in my bedroom before buying?

Yes. Send us a photo of the wall and we'll show you works to scale, and we offer in-home trials across greater Sydney.
