Nicole Allen Sculpture
Nicole Allen builds the human figure out of small steel panels, welded over a steel-rod armature and ground back until the seams disappear, then often sand-cast into aluminium. Her figures, from intimate pieces to works nearly three metres tall, explore the unexpected ways a body can be represented, in positive and negative space.

Born in 1967 and raised in Mount Eliza on Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula, Allen grew up around her mother's ceramics studio. She studied Visual Arts at Chisholm Institute in Frankston, majoring in sculpture, and spent a year working in stone in Zimbabwe. She cites Antony Gormley, Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti and Barbara Hepworth as influences.
"Ever since the first human scratched in sand an outline of another human, artists have been striving to portray their own interpretation of the human form. Very few have achieved perfection. And nor should they." Her work moves between stainless and Corten steel, cast aluminium and stone, and this body of work is a retrospective of her continuing figurative journey.
