John Fitzmaurice

John Fitzmaurice takes everyday objects and natural forms, twists them, and blows them up to landmark scale in mirror-polished stainless steel. His three-metre-plus works are abstract, durable and quietly funny, and his Twist & Pop won a major prize at Sculpture Bermagui.

Born in Sydney and now based at North Avoca on the NSW Central Coast, Fitzmaurice came to sculpture from a background in building and design. He has worked in stone, timber, fibreglass and Corten steel, but stainless steel is his favoured medium, and he handles every stage of each work himself, with durability and a high-quality finish at the heart of it. He prefers large outdoor pieces; his smaller works suit both homes and commercial spaces.

Exhibitions and awards

His group exhibitions include Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi), Swell Sculpture Festival (Queensland), Harbour Sculpture and ARTpark sculpture exhibitions. In 2022 Twist & Pop, a 3.6-metre mirror-finished stainless steel work, won the Bermagui Beach Hotel prize at Sculpture Bermagui. His work is held in private collections and he accepts private commissions.
