Onela Keal finds beauty where most people never look: in the industrial and man-made structures that shape our everyday surroundings. Influenced by the American Precisionists, she paints these forms with clean edges and careful light, so that something utilitarian becomes quietly monumental.
Read moreHow the light falls and the way these forms are viewed are considered closely in each composition, often producing surprising results that let us see familiar structures from a new perspective. With little human presence and minimal reference to nature, the constructions are isolated, inviting the viewer to consider them as objects in their own right, and to ask whether the spaces and atmospheres they create are beautiful in themselves.
Having returned to Australia, Keal is exploring how its rural and urban industrial settings lend themselves to her painting.
