Max Langborne

Max Langborne is an Australian abstract artist working on the Gold Coast. Entirely self-taught, he paints large-scale canvases that set subtle tones, scribbled marks and free-flowing line against bold blocks of colour – work that asks the viewer to pause and look into themselves as much as into the painting.

The work

Langborne’s paintings depart from formalism, embracing deeply human, instinctive mark-making and free-flowing movement, with a considered use of colour that creates an atmosphere of curiosity. Working mostly at large scale in acrylic, oil, pencil, charcoal and oil pastel, he combines subtle tonal grounds and loose scribble with larger shapes in bolder colour. He has no single style or template: he approaches each blank canvas with openness and paints only what inspires and excites him, citing Cy Twombly and Teddy Millington-Drake among his influences.

Background

A lifelong reader, Langborne credits books with much of his creativity and imagination. Apart from his years at law school, his life has been guided by a pursuit of beauty and aestheticism. Architecture and furniture design were his first loves, and when he isn’t painting, reading or cooking he is most likely in his shed designing chairs and couches. Although relatively new to the art scene, his work is already attracting the attention of leading interior stylists and publishers.

Artist statement

I am an emerging abstract artist and designer on the Gold Coast. I love the freedom of working on large canvases and take inspiration from artists such as Cy Twombly and Teddy Millington-Drake.

I have been a bookworm all my life and I give that much of the credit for the creativity and wild imagination I have always had. I am fascinated by all things design – my first loves were architecture and furniture design.

In my paintings I work mostly on a large scale, combining subtle tones and marks and scribble with larger shapes in bolder colours. I do not have one singular style or template; I face each blank canvas with openness and paint only what inspires and excites me.
