Geisha & Ballerina Paintings

Geishas, ballerinas, dancers and flower girls are at the heart of Yosi Messiah’s figurative work. They are drawn with loose, spontaneous line and exaggerated eyes, and dressed in bold, saturated colour, so each figure reads as graceful and strong at the same time. The figures are imaginary and deliberately open, leaving the viewer to bring their own story to them.

Each painting is a signed original in mixed media, acrylic and oil pastel on canvas. The series runs from intimate 90 x 120cm portraits of single dancers to large multi-figure works: The Dance of a Life Time at 240 x 180cm, and With Dancers, a 300 x 120cm triptych made for a long wall, foyer or dining room.

Messiah studied life drawing at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and oil painting with Charlie Sheard, and has painted full time since 1997. He was a semi-finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2012 and a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize in 2010 and 2012, and his paintings are held by Ian Thorpe and Craig Ruddy.
