Large Figurative Paintings

Yosi Messiah’s ensemble paintings are his most ambitious: crowded, narrative canvases in which riders, warriors, players, lovers and dragons share one stage. Each figure is drawn with loose, spontaneous line and exaggerated eyes, and the scenes are imaginary and deliberately open, so every viewer reads a different story into them. Strong thoughts of narrative are always present.

This is also where his largest works sit. Fly High With a Dragon Fire and Internal Game each measure 285 x 215cm, alongside The Palace and The Players at 183cm square and My Three Warriors at 198 x 122cm. Painted in mixed media, acrylic and oil pastel on canvas, with colour built up in layers, they are statement originals for a foyer, boardroom, restaurant or double-height living space. Smaller ensemble works from 120cm suit a dining or entry wall.

Messiah has painted full time since 1997 after training at the Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney, and was a finalist in the Director's Cut Blake Prize in 2009 and 2010. His paintings hang in hotel and corporate collections including Intercontinental Hotels, Hilton Hotels, Marriott North Ryde and the Raptis Group.
