Zygmunt Libucha

Zygmunt Libucha sculpts the female figure with a silversmith’s eye for detail: elongated bronze women who lounge, stretch, flirt and dream, finished with a precision most sculptors never attempt. A two-time winner of the Shillam Sculpture Prize, he works in bronze and in stone, with black Chillagoe marble his favourite.

Libucha began studying electrical sciences in his native Poland before an apprenticeship in silversmithing, and built a successful silversmithing business while starting to sculpt in wood and bronze. He migrated to Australia in 1982 and became known for fine Australiana pieces in silver, inspired by the country's flora and fauna. In Sydney he attended workshops with sculptor John Gardner and began working in bronze, becoming a full-time sculptor in 1997 (see his profile at the Royal Queensland Art Society).

In his own words

"We landed in the country on a Saturday and were taken to Villawood migrant centre. I couldn't wait to start a new life. Having been a successful silversmith in Poland, I went to look for work on Monday. On Tuesday I was working for myself at a bench in a jeweller's workshop, rent free — the ultimate act of goodwill."

"Working for many years as a silversmith I developed a great need for details, and even now when I sculpt on a larger scale I cannot divorce myself from it. Although the time I spend on each sculpture increases enormously, the more it takes the better."
