Jonathan Leahey
Jonathan Leahey is the sculptor behind the giant steel paper planes that seem to have nose-dived into the city. His eight-metre paper plane on Adelaide Terrace in Perth (2010) has become a landmark, and the same simple, universal shape runs through his Corten and stainless steel work at every scale.
Read moreJonathan Leahey came to sculpture from film, working in Hollywood on special effects and robotics, and has worked exclusively as a sculptor for more than 20 years. He has created public artworks in the United States, Ireland, Belgium and Australia, from monumental steel pieces made from objects found on site to kinetic and animatronic installations, and has been a resident artist at Gasworks Arts Park in Melbourne.
Exhibitions and awards
Leahey has exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi, many times since 2008, and in the Montalto Sculpture Prize, the McClelland Sculpture Survey and Award and the Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award. He received the Surf Coast Shire Acquisition Award at Lorne in 2009 and the People's Choice Award at Yering Station in 2007. His work is held in collections including BHP, Smorgon and ArtsACT.
