Stephen Glassborow
Stephen Glassborow is an English-born Australian sculptor whose limited edition bronzes have centred on the human figure for almost 50 years. Trained at Newcastle upon Tyne and Brighton College of Art before moving to Australia as a young professional sculptor in the early 1980s, he pairs careful anatomical observation and classical precedent with a refined, elegant line (sometimes an Art Deco renaissance), and his work is held in public, corporate and hotel collections across Australia, Asia and the United States.
Read more"Bronze figurative sculpture has a long tradition. For me, the Art Deco period was the foundation for inspiration. Running parallel to that are ideas that spring from photographic imagery, fashion and robotics. Somewhere, ideas develop and grow, but always around the figure. I have always drawn, but mainly for the purpose of planning my sculptures. But now, my drawings are developing into a more expressive form of my creativity." Stephen Glassborow
Limited edition bronze sculpture
Each Glassborow figure begins in clay. Retaining fluidity in the body while still achieving sharp muscular definition is what drives him, and merging the two keeps him exploring the human form. The finished works are cast in bronze in limited editions and finished with patinas he develops himself, giving surfaces real depth and nuance.
His figures range from table-top bronzes on granite bases to large-scale public commissions, including two Lionel Rose public sculptures in Victoria. The smaller editions suit a sideboard, study or entry, while the larger works hold their own in foyers, gardens and commercial spaces.
Frequently asked questions
What makes Glassborow's bronze sculptures distinctive? A blend of Art Deco elegance, fashion and robotics imagery with precise anatomy, finished with his own custom patinas.
Are his sculptures suitable for homes and offices? Yes. Table-top editions suit residential interiors, and larger works are made for foyers, gardens and commercial spaces.
How are the limited editions made? Each work is modelled in clay, then cast in bronze in a limited edition and hand patinated.
Where else can I see his work? At our Woollahra gallery in Sydney, and in collections including the Manly Regional Art Gallery and the City of Whitehorse Regional Art Gallery.
