Gary Christian works from his Black Moss Studio in the Southern Highlands of NSW, where his practice has quietly accumulated over thirty years, 25 solo exhibitions, and a string of major public commissions including works for the Royal Botanic Gardens and the University of Western Sydney. He describes himself as an abstract landscape painter and sculptor who uses formal techniques and traditional materials to create works of contemporary minimalism, the natural world absorbed and distilled rather than literally rendered. Working initially in wood before incorporating steel, Christian’s sculptures participate in a distinctly Australian dialogue with the land, raising questions about memory, place and the connections we carry but rarely examine.
