Rebecca Rath
Australian Artist

The swish of the palette knife and use of bold colours emphasises the fearless flora of the Australian bush. I am safe to assume that all Australians are proud of their landscape. It is certainly unique with a vibrant sky, unyielding light and vigorous foliage. We are not a soft delicate European landscape and therefore should be treated differently. To gain authenticity it is important to be in the environment where all work starts in the tradition of ‘en plein air’. Whether it is a pencil study or large oil painting, being in the landscape is an important element to my work process. Seeking influence from the masters and traditions such as impressionism and expressionism, my work couples these together and brings them into a contemporary painting setting. This is seen in the traditional dark to light oil painting technique merged with a dynamic painting style. Contemporary society is already aware of the importance of wildlife conservation, my work seeks to strengthen this relationship with Nature and our personal responses to it.

I live with my family on a vineyard in Pokolbin, NSW, Australia. While an academic with a strong philosophical bent, ideally, I want nothing more than for others to experience the joy of art and nature. Working straight from nature & en plein air from my bush studio enables me to fully capture my love of the Hunter Valley landscape. I completed my Bachelor Fine Arts Honours from New South Wales University and participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, Italy, USA, Hong Kong, China and Switzerland.
