Bernadette Smith is a contemporary artist working within painting and photomedia. She has an extensive international exhibition record with solo shows in Berlin, San Francisco, Sydney, Perth and Singapore and is included in collections in Germany, France, Britain, Singapore, Spain, Australia and the USA. In 2020 she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from Sydney College of the Arts and featured in the 10th Canberra Festival of Art. She has been a finalist for the Mosman Art Prize, Fishers Ghost Art Award and was recently selected for an artist residency at Bundanon.

Her paintings relates to the psychological and material traces inherent within the beachfront, coastal forests and hinterlands of Australia representing liminal spaces where land meets the sea. The impasto surfaces and viscous fusions of oil paint achieved by constant reworking of the surface and underlying layers of her paintings express the physicality of the land. “Between cycles of fire, drought, floods and regrowth somehow nature survives revealing the corporeal legacy of the seasons that can never be taken for granted”.
