"REALIST PAINTINGS"
by
JERZY W MICHALSKI

18-04-2008 - 14-05-2008

JWM Study for the Writer
( JERZY W MICHALSKI)

Exhibition Comments:

The         The works of Jerzy Michalski exude validity, diversity and complexity of the urban

realism theme. The urban condition of modern realist painting combines the sombre tones of Jerzy’s Polish origins.  Dr Jerzy Michalski trained at the Poznan Academy of Fine Arts

and immigrated to Australia in 1991 and his recognized as a significant European / Australian painter.

Michalski’s  works achieve depth, distance, and interaction with light and form. Visual metaphor is evident even when there is exclusion of human representation. Architectonic interiors are compelling in their intricate detail while the landscapes are provincial in their familiarity.

His  artwork reveals a metaphor of light, hope and salvation; contrasts extended through the use of chiaroscuro technique. Michalski conjures up a modern realist narrative haunted by the memory of multilayered historical events, immutably captured in the solidity of the spaces and monuments. Jerzy Michalski is a master of  paint and perspective as well as the construction of mood and mindset. With cool and calculated elegance his work delves in to spatial constructs,  be they a building or streetscape.  This leaves the viewer with a feeling of having explored a calm lake or foreign territory.  This  emotional space of Michalski’s vision,  gives these paintings a compelling presence.

Jerzy Michalski’s work gratifies the viewer,  who after observing the work at close vantage point for some time, discovers yet more minute detail,  intricacy of colour and application – ever-changing hues in light and colour appear  through the duration of the changing light

of  day.
