Trevor was attracted to sculpture after many years in the technical design and engineering industry, working with all the various mediums used by sculptors – metal, concrete, fibreglass, timber, stone, clay and glass. He always enjoyed finding solutions to complex engineering, construction and manufacturing problems but, despite being very successful in this field, he had a strong yearning to find another way of using his creative ability, making it more expressive and personal; Sculpture answered that question.
In February 2000, he made a decision that changed his life. He became a full-time student at the National Art School, going on to complete a bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. He says it was the best decision he has ever made. He also says that, despite some regret that he had not made this decision earlier, he has learnt to appreciate the knowledge he brought with him as a mature age student – an understanding of the structural integrity and capability of the materials used in his sculptures, enabling him to test and extend the outcomes.
After years of involvement in the construction of multi-story buildings he is very drawn to the creation of monumental sculptures for public places and corporate environments.
Before beginning a project Trevor will thoroughly research the environment where the sculpture will be located. He will meet with architects, designers, community representatives and then develop a theme for the work and prepare sketches for ideas that relate to the theme. The site, surroundings and the client will all be carefully considered as the final sculpture evolves.
Trevor also enjoys working with private clients to create external and/or internal sculptures to enhance their gardens, courtyards and homes.
Trevor says, "My aim is to create sculptures that are solid in form yet fluid in movement. I want them to attract the viewer and entice them to look further, finding the more they look the more they see."
