4 Legs Good 2 Legs Bad

Surrealist Paintings Exhibition  Photo Session and Exhibition- March 11 to April 9

Artist Andrew Baines was inspired to create a unique series of dog paintings after his recent photo session in Adelaide, where he asked suited owners to walk over 100 Dachshunds through public streets & traffic lights.

Artist Statement

My work deals with escapism from our servile existence, be it human, cow, Rupert the bear or lately dog. I spend my life wandering the landscape in an introspective, existential daze looking for the answers, hopefully my paintings will unlock the truth…

Since 2005, Andrew has created over a two dozen surreal Installations on Australian beaches via collaborations with Hills Hoists, The United Nations organisation ofAustralia, The West Australian and Adelaide Symphony orchestras, LWD Company,Holstein Australia, the WA state Gallery, Anglicare, FMC Foundation & Wirra Wirra Vineyards with many volunteers.

Exhibition wines sponsored by  Wirra Wirra.

  CONTEMPORARY  BRONZE SCULPTURE

If my parents had had their way I would have been an engineer. Although I studied Electrical Sciences in my native Poland, I never completed my degree. I was yearning to learn a craft, to shape things with my hands. So, instead of fulfilling a parental ambition I became a silversmith. As Gdansk has a fine tradition in gold and silversmithery it was not too hard to find a silversmith to take me in. After three years of apprenticeship in Gdansk's leading workshop I passed my journeyman exam and shortly after I got my Master's Certificate. At the same time I was spending my evenings in a sculptor's studio next to my silversmithing workshop carving in wood and later creating sculptures in bronze.

In 1982 I migrated to Australia. The richness and beauty of Australian fauna and flora boosted my creativity profoundly and I became well known as a creator of many designs depicting Australian animals and flowers. From the beginning I was selling my works through Seasons Gallery in North Sydney, Beaver Gallery in Canberra and Maker's Mark in Melbourne. While living in Sydney I attended workshops with well-known sculptor John Gardner and made works mainly in bronze. Shortly after my move to Brisbane in 1988 I started to work in stone and operate now from my studio in Brisbane. Apart from bronze, I work in marble, granite, sandstone; and black Chillago marble is my favourite stone. In 1997 I stopped working as a silversmith and now I work as a full time sculptor.

Working for many years as a silversmith I developed a great need for details and even now when I sculpt on a large scale I cannot divorce myself from it. Although the amount of time I spend on each sculpture increases enormously, the more it takes the better. I guess, I want to enjoy every piece of stone as long as possible. I love to carve in marble the most intricate and crisp lines and lack of forgiveness of stone makes it more challenging. I create both figurative and abstract works and there are always several of them in my studio to appreciate.

LARISSA SMAGARINSKY   at ARTPARK  & SOHO  Galleries  SYDNEY

 CONTEMPORARY BRONZE SCULPTURE

'The idea for a new direction in my recent work is to find harmony in movement and proportion, elegance and simplicity in form. This is all combined in 'Harmony,' 'Eternal Youth,'  "Olympic Spirit' and 'Wild dancers'. One look at these sculptures should fill you with excitement and pleasure and a desire to touch them. The human body forever feeds my imagination, inspiring me as an artist to create again and again.

But only the moment of discovery within our self has the meaning, and moves the artist to find a new language for these creations.  We treasure only the moment of discovery within our self.

The hidden parts of our innermost natures are analogous to the secrets of the cosmos. We are constantly trying to uncover them, displaying them in the light of our understanding.' Larissa is consistently intent on capturing moments, spirits and essences; so much so that her legacy will be clear to both present and future generations

Larissa Smagarinsky draws the inspiration for her themes from a vast arena. Her stimuli come also from the Bible, ancient history, modern events and from human emotions. However her main interest has been and still is the human body in repose or movement. Movement fascinates the artist and many of her most successful works embody movement in sport,  gymnastics and dance. Some sculptures are just called 'Movement' (1993) others are more closely  defined eg: 'Crazy ballet' (1988) and 'Wild Dance" (2002). Her other great interest is in the  portrayal of love from mythology and the present. Larissa Smagarinsky explores its many aspects from the highly erotic in 'Lover's Ecstasy' (1990) and 'Tired Lovers' (1990)  to the maternal filial love and finally to the sublimated divine love in "Madonna" (1992).

Larissa is consistently intent on capturing moments, spirits and essences; so much so that her legacy will be clear to both present and future generations.

'The hidden parts of our innermost natures are  analogous to the secrets of the cosmos. We are  constantly trying to uncover them, displaying them in the light of our understanding.'
