Artworks visuala nd list of works on application

This high energy body of work has been created over a substantial time period. It can take up to 4 or 5 weeks from starting a painting, depending on the layers. In certain parts of the work to being sent on its way into the gallery, there are up to 8 layers and processes in different areas of any particular work.

The varied choices of processes I use depend a great deal on the type of story I am telling in that particular work. Some areas of intense interest are done with tools such as the point of a needle. Numerous brushes from extra large to the tiniest are used  for detailing.

I love to concentrate on the 'Please come closer' invitation. I often attach to the body of work,  to show the dual effect created on the initial  observation.

1st The power and energy given on the initial observation.

2nd The mesmerizing effect and calmness given on closer inspection of the infinite detail and tiny dimensions that go on forever.

I class my work as mixed media because there can be as many as 20 to 30 different materials used at any given time. I often have to crush powder or liquefy many of these high quality art products that I bring in from overseas unprocessed due to the fact I have a very individual application of the products which keeps my work ever evolving, intriguing and hopefully just as exciting to every new viewer of my work.

Preview AUGUST 19, 6 to 8pm

'Miertjes art has a twofold impact on viewers of her work.  First, because of the large scale and use of vibrant colors, the room is filled with energy and movement. Secondly being drawn in to closer inspection the work delights and amazes you with the miniscule detailing of abstract aerated bubbles, and then almost volcanic eruptions of transparent and intense shards of colors that immerse and mesmerize your eyes and thoughts.'

'With their grand scale, bold use of color, and high gloss finish, Miertje Skidmore's abstracted landscapes, depict the power of the elements and their capacity for destruction and regeneration.

The channels of viscose paints reveal a complex galaxy of colors, bleeding into each other and forming macro and micro cosmos', which gently absorb the viewer.

Since her first ever solo exhibition at art images gallery Adelaide, Miertje Skidmore has exhibited throughout Australia, now represented by commercial galleries in Sydney Melbourne and Queensland, she has fast become one of our most sought after artists.

Miertje Skidmore's work is widely represented in respected galleries throughout Australia, and is rapidly being sought by collectors within Australia and overseas countries in both corporate and private collections.

INNOVATIVE CONTEMPORARY FORGED STEEL

For the past 19 years I have worked in the medium of forged steels, predominantly on ornamental architectural commissions.

Working within a 1880s industrial blacksmithing workshop, at the Eveleigh Locomotive Rail yards, Sydney, I have had the unusual opportunity of having some pretty serious equipment at my disposal. I utilize machinery that was associated in the past with the forging of parts for steam locomotives- furnaces, forges, power-hammers, guillotines, plate rollers, blacksmith's swages and tongs.

My work has always exhibited sculptural qualities, but it wasn't until I allowed myself to relinquish the practical ideal that all my work had to be functional that I've been able to have the freedom to make pieces of art on my own terms. Stylistically these works suit the current mood in Modernist architecture, reminiscent of the 'mid-century modern' aesthetic of the 1940s through to the 1970s.

Composing together irregular geometric forms creates a strong visual effect as the void spaces contrast with the solidity of the steel. By means of 'forging down' the components some areas are in silhouette, then seemingly stretch into a flattened surface. The surfaces acquire an earthy, textural quality during the forging down process. It is this sort of dimensional change that is so alluring about forged steel, it has its own language, symmetry and dynamism. Its strength allows the sculptures to be tall and slender.

WENDIE MCCAFFLEY SCULPTURE  - FORGED STEEL

For the past 19 years I have worked in the medium of forged steel, predominantly on ornamental architectural ironwork commissions.

Working within a 1880s industrial blacksmithing workshop at the Eveleigh Locomotive Railway yards I have had the unusual opportunity of having some pretty serious gear at my disposal. I utilize machinery that was associated in the past with the forging of parts for steam Locomotives.

In the  new series of sculptures the initial conception was to create feature pieces with a retro 60 – 70 s retro feel, to add 'groove' to any space.

Composing together irregular geometric shapes creates a strong visual effect and by means of certain methods some parts are in silhouette while others have more of a flat surface. These surfaces acquire an earthy textural quality during forging. It is this sort of immediate dimensional change in the steel that is so fascinating about forged steel. When hot it responds to the hand (or power hammer) at the bidding to the imagination.

RUDI JASS  - CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE

Level One Open Gallery and SOHO GALLERIES ANNEX

German-born sculptor Rudi Jass creates water features and sculptures characterised by clean flowing lines, elegant forms and timeless design that are equally at home in small courtyards or amid the strong shapes of bold modern architecture in urban and commercial developments. Stainless steel, copper and bronze are often combined with glass and stone in his distinctive style. All pieces are handmade in small or limited editions. Rudi's work is highly sought after by architects and landscape designers, who particularly appreciate the fact that some of his designs can be modified to complement individual surroundings or some distinctive architectural feature. Custom-designed pieces can also be created.
