ARTIST ALISON COULTHURST

Inspired by her year of painting and successful exhibitions in Europe with all paintings sold, Alison has returned to her studio in Byron Shire to work on a new body of work entitled "There are no ordinary moments"

Alison says "after living in Europe in a completely different environment I realised in this time of my life that it is important to embrace my surroundings wherever I am, so I've returned with a new frame of mind to be in the moment and live in the present. I am following my feelings and my enhanced energy and have painted these emotions onto the canvas".

"Enjoy the art and the moment."

Exhibition dates June 6 to July 3. Exhibition catalogue on application

CONTEMPORARY ASSEMBLAGE WALL RELIEF-

Exhibiting Formworks  2017

From his birthplace in Ballarat, Jenkins completed his schooling in 1976 at Ballarat College before travelling extensively on a surfing holiday throughout Western Australia. Coming out of his carpentry apprenticeship in 1981, Jenkins work in construction of residential and commercial buildings led him to develop a keen interest in design.

In 1986, Jenkins was involved in an inner urban construction of townhouses development of warehouses to apartments and offices.

In 1994, Jenkins moved with his family to Bayside Melbourne, purchasing an old shop in Black Rock and pioneering the innovative shop top developments within the area.

During this phase, Jenkins explored the notion on making transportable artforms as opposed to the relocation.

Married to an artistic wife, Jenkins was supported in the pursuit of his artistic expression, and along with traditional building contracts, also worked on many professional photographic shoots, TV and film set productions constructions.

From unit, home, commercial and shop top projects, to gallery cafe designs, Jenkins artistic ambitions have always been at the forefront of his ambition.

The Beaumaris Art Group has given expression to Jenkins eye for design and detail the expression. His art continues to be recognised as being substantially unique, with many pieces taking pride of place in private collections.

Jenkins see the unique beauty and artistic potential of recycled timbers, signs and discarded building materials. The patina, the hue, the possibilities, the history of what lays beneath. His building  skill ensures every piece is superbly crafted and finished, ready to capture the light and become a true conversation piece.

Formworks Wall Relief Sculpture
Untitled Relief Series - Detail

by ANTONIO COLANGELO

Exhibition Comments:

 ANTONIO COLANGELO  WALL RELIEF

The latest works, the aluminium bas relief, have  been of particular interest in the today's modern fitout including stainless steel and alloy highlights.

Colangelo's finish is extremely high, evoking a topographical effect, with a highly light responsive monochromatic surface.  The work is ideally placed in low light areas, as it absorbs and reflects the available light revealing a metallic incandescence, a kind of understated sensuality.

His work comes in various sizes that can be combined to form diptyches, triptychs and series of panels

The Creative Process

A number of processes go into the creation of Tony's highly fabricated sculptures.

Various objects are screwed into and/or attached to the tyres of a tractor. Tony then drives the tractor over the aluminium. The result is a substrate with rippling, dimpled effects, negative and positive.

This may seems "simple" but at this point the emerging sculpture goes through a number of highly fabricated processes:

* The corners are welded and ground sometimes up to 3 to 4 times  aluminium welding being a highly skilled function. The bas-relief is now a smooth continuous surface which can then be fitted seamlessly onto the specially constructed timber support.

* The sculpture is then polished many times enabling light to play off against the surface shapes.

* The work is finished off with a specially formulated clear lacquer. This not only gives the sculpture a lustrous surface but prevents oxidization.

* Further polishing results in a circular lustre, enhancing the surface which has now taken on a sense of swirling movement.
