The gold rush in the Central West area around Forbes brought up to 40,000 people to the district, hopeful of making their fortune. This meant that in the 1860ís, the population was about 7 times larger than it is today. Opportunities were therefore also presented to those wanting to make their fortunes in other ways, especially those who, like Ben, were very familiar with the entire district. This particular back road, often travelled by Ben and his gang, leads from Sandy Creek to Goolooogong on the Lachlan River.
