The Commercial Bank in Carcoar, which still exists today, is the site of the first daylight robbery attempt in Australia. Two members of Hall’s gang, O’Mealley and Gilbert, failed in their efforts, when locals were alerted by the sounds of shots being fired from the bank, by both the bank employee and the would-be robbers. The laneway opposite the bank is presumed to be their escape route.
