At 6 a.m. on the 5th of May 1865, Ben Hall emerged from the bush and walked to his two hobbled horses. A hidden police party of 8, led by Sub-Inspector Davidson had had him under surveillance since the previous evening. Recognising him definitively by his characteristic limp, the police state that they called upon him to surrender, but he turned and ran. Heavily armed himself, he did not fire a single shot. He was shot 30 times during his attempted escape. The police weapons were all completely emptied during the arrest
