GREG HARBUTT - CONTEMPORARY BRONZE SCULPTURE
Sensuality and emotion are the touchstones of Greg Harbutt's sculpture. Seeking to reaffirm the intrinsic value of figurative sculpture Harbutt has apprenticed himself to master stone-carvers in Italy and skilled modelers in Australia in his quest to meld traditional skills with his own aesthetic vision.
Taking inspiration from artists such as Rodin and Lucchesi, his work invites the viewer not only to visually caress the flowing feminine curves and strong masculine lines but to actively touch the work.
Tactile elements, such as hair draped over a shoulder exposing an elegant neck, or the intricacies of an expressive hand serve to capture the viewer and draw them into the human drama manifested in each figures' attitude, repose and expression.
Harbutt works in both bronze and resin and less frequently marble. Using techniques of modeling, carving, moulding and casting he is adept at pursuing his vision in a number of media. As an emerging sculptor, he has recently realised a much desired opportunity to focus exclusively on his sculptural practice. He is currently working on a near life size figure, consolidating conceptual elements expressed individually in recent works.
