MIERTJE SKIDMORE ABSTRACT PAINTINGS
'FOLLOWING OUR INSTINCTS' August /Septemebr 2010
Instincts are the guiding force in all living creatures whether human or animal. It's how we respond to others, and to our surroundings. It's our instincts that safely get us through our everyday situations in all their varying multitudes.Through the process of producing my art I endeavor to share my instinctive responses to the things I observe or experience in my life.
Artist statement:
As individual as we all are, so are our responses, to the different aspects of the amazing planet that surrounds us.
In an abstract form, on a daily basis, through my art, I can't help but express the emotive power of the diversities shown in nature. The contrary way society pushes the focus on wealth and possessions, as the ultimate joy, can make us overlook the simple pleasures that are to be found in life.
The almost hallucinogenic colors in a pool of water; the sharp contrasts in the tones and vibrancies of a rock face against the subtleties of soft shades in the sky; the bright colors in a fish, bird, flower etc against their softer surroundings can instantly transform our moods.
My art often depicts small creatures either accepting, helping, reaching out, or grasping and pushing against each other, we all can behave like any one of these creatures at any given time. Sometimes forgetting we are just temporary residents on this beautiful earth that we share and not own during our lifetime.
'Remember to stop, look around and enjoy each day as it comes.'
Comments:
'Miertjes art has a twofold impact on viewers of her work. First, because of the large scale and use of vibrant colors, the room is filled with energy and movement. Secondly being drawn in to closer inspection the work delights and amazes you with the miniscule detailing of abstract aerated bubbles, and then almost volcanic eruptions of transparent and intense shards of colors that immerse and mesmerize your eyes and thoughts.'
'With their grand scale, bold use of color, and high gloss finish, Miertje Skidmore's abstracted landscapes, depict the power of the elements and their capacity for destruction and regeneration.
The channels of viscose paints reveal a complex galaxy of colors, bleeding into each other and forming macro and micro cosmos', which gently absorb the viewer.
